Painted filing cabinet using POP Paint.

Posted on 28 Apr 2017

Long weekends are perfect for getting things done and for me that usually means picking up a paint brush and painting something.
This week it was time to give this ugly duckling a little bit of a make-over.

But what’s a girl to do when she runs out of her favourite POP Paint colour and no-where to buy some extras, well you make a plan of course.
I ended up mixing lots of left-overs to create this custom blue/grey colour. I am still in two minds whether I want to add some
more distressing and perhaps some dark wax to it to make it really look like a grey old rusty guy. But for now getting rid of that traditional brown/cream colour
was just enough for me.

step 1 – This is what this filing cabinet looked like. I know right? Really ugly.

step 2 – I knew the handles would get a lot of wear on them so I opted to spray them white first.

step 3 – My paint mixture consisted of whatever was left in these paint jars.
I mixed roughly three parts Polar, 1 Part Urban and 2 parts Provence.
This gave me a blue-grey colour that was somewhere between what is in the rest of the room and it worked perfectly.

step 4 – Paint the entire cabinet with the paint mixture. I used a foam roller to speed things up, yes I am impatient like that.

step 5 – For the bottom edges, I slide a piece of scrap cardstock under it and paint with a brush, and then a second coat with my roller to smooth things out.

step 6 – A light sanding smoothed the surface and removes the chalkiness. Remember to give it a good wipe down to remove the chalk dust.

step 7 – To protect the surface for now I added some clear wax. Paint the wax onto the surface and leave
for a few minutes before buffing it to a nice shine.

I love how easy it is to transform something as ugly as this metal filing cabinet into something really pretty and functional.
Because let’s face it, even thought I try and remove my paper trail, I too have to get some filing done every now and again.
And this pretty boy got me up to date for some of my filing and important documents.

all that is left to do now is to decide whether to age him for some much needed character, or to let him be for a while…
I will keep you posted.
What POP Paint projects have you got planned for this long weekend?
